North-East Scotland's finest young brass talent was on display at the Northern Counties Solos contest in Forfar on Sunday 19th January 2020. As well as the NCBBA titles, the event also served as the regional qualifier for the Besson Scottish Solo and Ensemble finals next month.
The entry of just six soloists was somewhat disappointing given the good numbers about recent years, but what the day lacked in quantity, it more than made up for in quality. Adjudicator Robert Fraser was effusive in his praise of what he had heard, "I was surprised by the difficulty of the pieces chosen" he explained, "but all performers dealt well with the demands of some tricky music, and I was extremely impressed with all of the performances."
The Intermediate (16 and under) section was won by trombonist Alix Bailey's energetic rendition of Gareth Wood's Dance Sequence, while young cornet star Gavin Lee took home the Youth (21 and under) title on Henri Büsser's Andante and Scherzo.
All six competitors go on to represent the region in the Besson Scottish Solo and Ensembles championship finals on Saturday 8th February.

Northern Counties Open Contest 2017 Report/Results
Resurgent Kingdom Brass claim Northern Counties title in Kinross.
BRITAIN’S MOST NORTHERLY BAND ASSOCIATION, the Northern Counties BBA, held their annual Open Contest on Sunday 4th June. Bands from across Scotland descended on Kinross, each bidding to entertain and impress with their own-choice entertainment programmes.
Adjudicator Andrew Duncan explained that two performances had really stood out for him on the day. In the end, however, it was a resurgent Kingdom Brass under the baton of Paul Drury who swept to the title, the Fife band making up for their Scottish Championship disappointment earlier in the year with a performance of real quality to edge out reigning champions Bon Accord Silver.
The winners elect opened their programme with bold accounts of Franz Waxman’s Taras Bulba overture and Shostakovich’s lively Folk Festival. Solo Trombone Alex Philip was in lyrical form on Hoagy Carmichael classic Stardust, before the band turned to music from Disney’s ‘Tangled’; the aptly named Kingdom Dance here in an arrangement from the pen of conductor Paul Drury. The laid-back swing of Eiliv Herikstad’s All to Jesus brought the tempo down, before the title was sealed with a final flourish – the day’s Best Percussion section winners and Best Soprano Martin Edwards again in fine fettle on Matthew Hall’s showpiece Nightingale Dances. It was to be a fruitful return to form for the new champions, who also collected the Most Entertaining Programme, Best Non-NCBBA Band and Winning Conductor trophies.
There was to be no fourth consecutive title for Bon Accord Silver, the Aberdeen band and conductor Steve Malcolm eventually having to settle for the runner-up spot. Kicking the programme off with Philip Harper’s exciting Lionheart, flugel soloist Sarah Saum featured next in Mark Freeh’s arrangement of the Cole Porter standard I’ve Got You Under My Skin. The fiery rhythms of Johnny Bates’ Concertino Catalonia drew adjudicator praise for the “impressive playing” on show, before the day’s Best Soloist winner Richard Kidd excelled in the beautiful Philip Sparke euphonium solo Summer Isle. As it happened, the top two bands chose the same finishing piece, Bon Accord also rounding off their programme with a vivid ‘Nightingale Dances’, adding the Best NCBBA Member Band trophy along the way.
In third place, and taking home the Best 1st Section trophy, were Lochgelly under Paul McKelvie OBE. Opting to open with the fanfares of Richard Strauss’ Fest Musik Der Stadt Wien, a colourful rendition of the Cossack Fire Dance from Peter Graham’s Call of the Cossacks followed, with soloists on top form. A pair of Mark Freeh arrangements followed, firstly the music of Leonard Bernstein, with Tonight from West Side Story, then the uptempo latin sounds of Malaguena. Principal cornet Stuart Hepburn’s reflective interpretation of Share My Yoke was next, with the programme drawing to a close on Dean Jones’ Glorifico Aeternum.
Elsewhere, young trombonist Frankie O’Donnell provided the vocal on Sinatra favourite My Way, as Mark Good’s Renfrew Burgh took home the Best 2nd Section prize. Irvine & Dreghorn collected the Best 3rd Section award, with an eclectic programme including multiple bicycle bells in their conductor’s own arrangement of Queen’s ‘Bicycle Race’, while Dysart Colliery continued their fine recent run of contest form to claim the Best 4th Section title.

Past Reports and News
Northern Counties Open Contest 2014 Report/Results
Bon Accord Silver see off local rivals to be crowned Northern Counties champions.
BON ACCORD SILVER BAND held off the challenge of local rivals Granite City Brass to take victory in a closely-fought Northern Counties Open Contest on Saturday.
Thirteen bands took to the stage in Kinross, keeping the audience entertained with a real variety of programmes and some fine playing throughout the day.
The champions, under the baton of Stephen Malcolm, opened their "well judged" programme with a exhilarating rendition of Peter Graham's ‘Phoenix', next featuring Mark Boyd as trombone soloist in the evocative Adrian Drover arrangement of ‘My Funny Valentine' - drawing praise from adjudicator Anne Crookston as "so accomplished and musically phrased" and "sensitively accompanied" by the band. Howard Snell's exuberant treatment of Darius Milhaud's ‘Scaramouche Brasileira' was to follow, offering a showcase for the band's percussion section who went on to claim the trophy for Best Percussion for the second consecutive year. An electrifying performance of the Greek dance ‘Zeibekikos' from Philip Wilby's Euphonium Concerto (complete with plate-smashing!) was enough to convince the adjudicator to award the day's Best Soloist prize to Richard Kidd, before the set concluded with a rousing ‘MacArthur Park'. To add to the smiles on the trip back to Aberdeen, the band also took home the Best NCBBA Band and Best First Section trophies, while soprano player Mark James completed the impressive haul of silverware by scooping the Best Soprano award.
In their previous meeting at this year's Scottish First Section Championships, Granite City Brass had led home an Aberdonian 1-2, with Bon Accord having to settle for the runners-up spot. However, on this occasion the tables were turned, and although conductor Bruce Wallace's "well thought-through" set saw them collect the Most Entertaining Programme prize, it was to be their only consolation on the day. They first drew praise from the adjudicator for their "excellent" control during two unconducted openers - the classic Samuel B. Wood march ‘The West Riding' and slow euphonium solo ‘Reverend Archie Beaton' played by Lewis Catto. With conductor now back at the helm there followed the dynamic 4th movement of Martin Ellerby's ‘Evocations' and the Trevor Sharpe trombone trio ‘Blades of Toledo' featuring Kenny Hamilton, Pauline Carroll and Martin Neale. Howard Snell's popular arrangement of ‘The Appian Way' from Respighi's ‘Pines of Rome' provided a dramatic conclusion to what Anne Crookston described in her adjudication as a "great show" offering "great variety".
Rounding off the podium positions and taking the Best Non-NCBBA Band trophy back to Ayrshire were Alan Cameron and Newmilns & Galston, with the adjudicator saying that only a few blips, clips and minor intonation issues had eventually separated the top three placings. The band opened with Howard Snell's lively arrangement of Tchaikowsky's Cossack Dance from the opera ‘Mazeppa', before Principal Cornet Douglas Cameron starred in the moving Adagio from Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony, arranged for soloist by Ray Farr. Philip Sparke's ‘Mountain Song' and the day's second rendition of ‘Phoenix' rounded off their performance.
Fresh from their recent Europeans experience, the ever-improving Tullis Russell Mills under Paul Drury led home the pack in fourth place, just pipping a spirited Shotts St Patrick's to the Best Second Section award. Mark Good's Renfrew Burgh produced an encouraging performance to see off higher section opposition en route to the Third Section prize, while Buckhaven & Methil finished off the day's awards as Best Fourth Section band.

Northern Counties Brass Band Contest - Results 2013
In what was a close run 2013 Northern Counties contest, adjudicator Bryan Allen plumped for Kirkintilloch Kelvin's varied programme featuring Gordon Kyle in the arrangement of 'Live and Let Die' . Directed by Charles Kennan, they retained the Champion's trophy which is becoming very familiar with the journey back to Glasgow. They narrowly pipped Aberdeen based band Bon-Accord Silver, led by Stephen Malcolm, who featured principal trombonist Mark Boyd in 'Bolivar' - a performance that would see Mark take home the Best Soloist prize.
Third place went to Tullis Russell Mills Band under the direction of Paul Drury. The Fife based band finished their entertaining set with a "vocal" and rousing rendition of "They come from the East"
There were section prizes for Kingdom 'B' Band, taking home the best third section band, and Tullis Russell Intermediate Band who won the best fourth section band.
The Northern Counties Open Contest will hopefully be making a permanent return to the contesting schedule, with a date for 2014 already being considered.
