Dutch Open is ready for brass battle
Tuesday 4 June 2019This Saturday the 8th of June 2019 the Dutch Open Brass Band Championships (DOBC) will be held in theatre De Lawei in Drachten, The Netherlands. Every year more bands want to participate in these popular championships. No previous edition of the DOBC has seen so many competing bands. Spectators can expect a day full of beautiful brass music.
The DOBC starts at 10 am with eight bands in the second section. One of the pieces that will be performed is A Brief Symphony of Time by Simon Dobson. This piece was commissioned by Smørås Skolemusikk and is a tribute to physicist Stephen Hawking, who died in 2018. Smørås Skolemusikk won the Norwegian championship NM skolekorps brass 2018.
From 3.20 pm the first section will take the stage. In this section there are three participants. The program includes the works A King's Lie by Stan Nieuwenhuis, Journey to the Center of the Earth by Peter Graham and Of Distant Memories by Edward Gregson.
From 5.45 pm the battle starts in the championship section. With seven bands, this section is well represented. Two bands will perform A Brussels Requiem. This piece was written by Bert Appermont in 2017 following the attacks in Brussels a year earlier. The French children's song Au claire de la Lune is the common thread. The piece consists of four parts and revolves around hope and belief in another world and is also a tribute to all victims. Appermont will judge the first and second section and will undoubtedly sit among the spectators during the championship section. Other pieces to be played are Destination Moon by Paul Raphael, The 39th Parallel by Peter Graham, Machu Picchu - The Secret City by Thibaut Bruniaux, A Tale as Yet Untold by Philip Sparke and The Fallen Bride by Ludovic Neurohr.
This year the international adjudicators are Simone Rebello from the United Kingdom, Armin Bachmann from Switzerland, Bert Appermont from Belgium and Danny Oosterman from the Netherlands. For each section the adjudication team will consist of two adjudicators.
There are several interesting prizes for the winning bands. The total value of prizes awarded this edition has never been so high.
Just like last year, Brasspass.tv will provide the live stream. The live stream from DOBC is available as a monthly subscription of GPB 12.99. There is a video on demand option on the platform, with which the video can be viewed several times. With the monthly subscription you can also view other videos, e.g. the recordings of the Dutch Open in 2018 and concerts of the Cory Band.
Tickets for the Dutch Open Brass Band Championships can be ordered through the website of the DOBC: https://www.dobc.eu/index.php/wpgforms/kaarten/ A ticket for the morning and afternoon program only (Second Section and First Section) costs €10.00.
