Scottish Youth Band Championships Information For Bands
DATES Saturday 23 November (am): Percussion Ensembles: see separate information sheet.
Sunday 24 November (all day): Young Bands, Preparatory, Novice, Development, Senior Section and Premier Section.
VENUE Perth Concert Hall
Young Bands Section:
This section is for bands of any size that have not reached the Preparatory level and wish to perform and experience the day’s music making at the festival.
Preparatory Bands Section:
This section is for young in-experienced bands or small groups.
Novice Bands Section:
This section is for more experienced junior bands.
Development Bands Section:
This section is for experienced youth bands.
Players must be 16 years and under on 24th November 2019.
Bands in this section may use up to 4 over-age players.
Bands in the Preparatory, Novice and Development Section will play a
programme of own choice music not exceeding 15 minutes playing time
this will include a set work from the list at their chosen level,.
The set work in these sections is compulsory.
Senior Section
This section is for bands that have progressed from the Development Bands level. The winning band in this section may receive an invitation to compete in the European Youth Brass Band Championships in Palanga, Lithuania 2020 on the recommendation of the adjudicators.
Players must be 18 years and under on 24th November 2019.
Bands in this section may use up to 4 over-age players up to the age of 22 on
24th November 2019.
Bands can play a programme of own choice music not exceeding 20 minutes playing time.
Premier Section
This section is for more experienced bands that have progressed from the Senior Bands level. The winning band in this section will receive an invitation to compete in the European Youth Brass Band Championships in Palanga, Lithuania 2020 on the recommendation of the adjudicators.
Players must be 22 years and under on 24th November 2019.
Bands can play a programme of own choice music not exceeding 25 minutes playing time.
FORMAT (a) Own choice programme plus a set work in Preparatory, Novice and Development sections.
(b) There is no limit on the number of players in each band.
(c) Players may play in more than one band per section.

(a) Preparatory Section:

TIMING (a) It is important for bands to keep strictly to the allocated playing time. Changeover time between bands must be as efficient as possible.
(b) SBBA will provide an experienced stage crew who will work with one nominated adult representative from each band in setting the stage.
(c) Bands will be expected to be ready to play 6 minutes after the previous band has left the stage.
ADJUDICATION Adjudication will be open in all sections.
AWARDS (a) The adjudicator will give vocal feedback to every band on their performance.
(b) All bands will be awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze certificate to acknowledge their level of achievement in each section.
(c) Trophies will be presented to the winning bands in the Preparatory, Novice, Development, Senior and Premier sections. The Young Bands section will receive certificates.
PRE-DRAW The event will be pre-drawn 3 weeks prior to the event, which will assist bands in making their arrangements for the day of the festival.
INSTRUMENTS While recognised and accepted brass band instruments are preferred, other instruments may be used as per the score.
ENTRY FEES (a) The entry fee for Scottish bands will be £50, which includes the annual SBBA membership registration fee of £10. (Bands entering for the first time are exempt from this registration fee).
(b) All cheques should be made payable to: Scottish Brass Band Association.
(c) If using bank transfer, the Scottish Brass Band Association bank is:

Your band’s name should be the Bank Transfer Reference in
order to track your payment.
TICKETS (a) All bands taking part may purchase entry wrist-bands for their own members at £2.00 each.
(b) Tickets for audience members cost £12, from Perth Concert Hall box office (concessions £10).
(c) Parents and supporters of the Youth Bands may purchase Concession price tickets for £5 if ordered through the band before 1 November 2019.
(d) Audience children of primary school age may purchase £2 wrist-bands.
(e) Wrist-bands should be uplifted from the SBBA stand on arrival at the hall.
(f) Please complete and submit the enclosed order form as early as possible along with the appropriate remittance to John Boax.
CLOSING DATE (a) As there are limits on the number of bands which can be accommodated, please submit your entry as soon as possible and certainly no later than 30 September 2019.
(b) Applications are treated on a “first come first served basis”.
(c) Please note that your wrist-band order form may be submitted later and you should not delay submission of your entry form pending completion of your wrist-band order form.
MUSIC (a) Two Copies of music scores must be provided.
(b) Scores for Bands drawn number One in the opening section of the day must be sent to John Boax one week before the festival.
(c) All other bands must hand in scores to control desk on arrival at Perth Concert Hall.
(d) Programme notes and stage plans for all sections must be sent to John Boax One week before the festival.
(e) Any band who wishes to use Powerpoint, special lighting or any other staging requests to enhance their performance, must contact Julie Nicoll email: sbbatreasurer@gmail.com or mobile: 0791 779 8655 as soon as possible and certainly no later than two weeks before the festival. It may not be possible to accommodate any requests received after that date.
PHOTOGRAPHS (a) An official SBBA Photographer will take photographs at the event.
(b) Please indicate on the Entry Form if you do not wish your band to be photographed.
