Band hall is early Christmas present for Clackmannan

Saturday 5 December 2020

Members of Clackmannan District Band have received an early Christmas present – in the form of a new band hall.

Due to Coronavirus restrictions and the fact that the existing rehearsal facilities are part of a shared premises with a dance studio, the band was given the opportunity to move into a sole use building. It was an offer from the landlord that was greeted with enthusiasm, especially as it was seen as a positive step in the future development of Clackmannan and its associated bands.

“The new band hall has a much larger rehearsal space with scope for a side seating area enabling us to use it to its fullest potential,” explained band president Debbie Ross.

“There is scope for small family concerts for our youth and development band/ ensemble and for open rehearsals. We shall be installing adaptable acoustics – by way of a pulley system roof boards and side curtains – to enable us to have a dry, dead sound for rehearsals or to open things up and make use of its lovely vaulted ceilings.”

She continued: “In addition we will have a kitchen area, a dedicated library space and a separate instrument and uniform storage area. The hall can also be used as recording and rehearsal space for individual players and couples to work on the programme music for forthcoming virtual recordings.

“We hope through time for this to become a fantastic hub for brass and percussion activities in our small town.”

Band president Debbie Ross and James Twist, committee member and youth band representative, try out the keys to their new band hall.

The move, which keeps the band based in Alloa, just a mile away from its old premises, will be completed in the new year after the transfer of the music library, chairs, stands and instruments.

Clackmannan is linking in with the St Andrews Music Participation (StAMP) project with the aim of supporting the progress of beginners into the youth band by starting a new after-school club just as soon as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and face-to-face playing can resume.

Debbie added: “We plan to enter online contests early next year, using the new band hall as a recording space. We are also intending to hold an ‘in band’ solo and duet contest later next year to celebrate Clackmannan District Band’s 30th anniversary since its formation from the amalgamation of Alloa & Alva bands.”

Marvelling at the high ceiling in the new band hall are (from left) second horn James Twist, president and second euphonium Debbie Ross and vice-president and soprano Julie Johnston.
