9. Brass Sounds Inverclyde (Joshua Parkhill)

A real statement of intent from Brass Sounds Inverclyde, with a tight and engaging opening.

There’s a great effort to bring out the sense of light and shade in the music, and soloists display mature, expressive sounds, with MD Joshua Parkhill allowing the music to breathe beautifully.

What a way to round off the Third Section!

8. Langholm Town (Chris Bradley)

There’s a calm assurance to Langholm Town, conducted by Chris Bradley. It’s well measured in the opening stages, with great attempts to convey the variety of musical colours bubbling away in this score about medieval legend, Corineus.

The Borders band is working hard to make sure nothing is overcooked.

7. Perthshire Brass (Willie McMullan)

Perthshire Brass demonstrates a sound of real warmth and balance - and the same can be said around the stand, from soprano cornet to bass trombone. Yummy!

It’s an engaging, characterful reading as Perthshire Brass and Willie McMullan make their bid for success in the Third Section.

6. Penicuik Silver (Alan Fernie)

There’s lots of enthusiasm from Penicuik Silver, perfectly characterised by musical director, Alan Fernie!

The players are working so hard to rise to the challenges in this score, and the storytelling is evident as the Midlothian band enjoys bringing the music to life.

5. St. Ronan's Silver (Chris Shanks)

A singing approach from St Ronan’s, as it takes to the stage under the baton of Chris Shanks.

Lots of the detail in Christopher Bond’s score leaps from the page, from the bold and majestic opening, to the sensitivity and moments of reflection which follow.

Every twist and turn is controlled, with razor-sharp precision, by the MD.

4. Croy Silver (Kenneth Blackwood)

Croy Silver takes to the stage and offers a refined opening, with percussion adding a touch of colour - but not getting in the way of the storytelling, which unfolds nicely.

Soaring tunes rise to the fore across the band in a piece which seems to be capturing the enthusiasm of Third Section bands at the Scottish Championships.

3. Highland Brass (Mark Bell)

Bands are relishing Christopher Bond’s music, and Highland Brass is no exception. The melodic lines are treated with energy and expression as Highland Brass lifts the lid on this medieval legend. There are some sparkling sounds around the stand too, from the likes of solo cornet and xylophone. It all makes for another enjoyable performance!

2. Peebles Burgh (Vaughan Fleischfresser)

A light approach from Peebles, enhanced by lovely solo cornet playing. Percussion is bold and energetic, adding to the fine musical storytelling on display.

1) Dysart Colliery (Robert Fraser)

We’re off and running in the Third Section at the 2024 Scottish Championships!

Dysart Colliery gets proceedings off to an enjoyable start in set work Corineus, by Christopher Bond. The composer is in the hall to hear his piece being played, and Dysart is showing off some lovely soloists - beautiful!
