NYBBS awards announced at Brass at the Park

Monday 12 August 2024

Brass at the Park provided the perfect backdrop for the announcement of which NYBBS students would be recipients of special awards as a result of their participation in the summer course.

Reserve Band musical director John Boax told the packed marquee that the following players have received well-deserved recognition:

Children’s Band

Best Student: Hollie Reid (percussion) for being “kind, enthusiastic, talented, lovely!”. Nominated by MD Alan Fernie and tutors

SBBA President’s Award for the best team: Basses

Solo contest winner: Carter Burchill (cornet, playing The Ashgrove)

Reserve Band

Best Student: David Bone (bass trombone) for being “patient, focused, driven, trying his best all week, taking on feedback, massive improvement”. Nominated by course tutors

SBBA President’s Award for the best team: Second and third cornets

Solo contest winner: Charlie Colville (cornet)

Senior Band

Best Student: Henry Dormer (cornet) for his “contribution to rehearsals and sectionals - always 100% effort and engagement at ALL times!”

SBBA President’s Award for the best team: Percussion

Philip McCann trophy for best cornet: Luke Parkhill (soprano cornet)

Richard Evans trophy for solo contest winner: Charlie Boax (baritone)

Nominations for European Youth Brass Band 2025: Zoe Wilson (cornet), Rona Campbell (flugel horn) and Charlie Boax (baritone) – nominated by musical directors and course tutors

Beth Damer Memorial Award: Angus Crompton (percussion)

“Angus has demonstrated perseverance and resilience all week, giving up his free time, asking for additional help and showing outstanding progress. He is continually striving to improve his technique and skills and sets an excellent example to all his NYBBS family. From an MD perspective, Angus attended an Easter course a few years ago as a very inexperienced player and has developed into, not only a fine musician, but a very integral team member and a thoroughly polite and personable young man.

Well done, Angus!”
