Youth championships bring the curtain down on another fantastic Scottish Festival of Brass

Monday 25 November 2024

Yesterday was a great day of celebration for the mother-and-daughter team of Katrina and Mae Barr who led Campbeltown’s junior bands to success at the Scottish Youth Band Championships at the Perth Concert Hall.

Katrina guided Campbeltown Development Band to its retention of the Development title while Mae, conducting at a contest for the first time, took the Campbeltown Intermediate Band to a Gold Award in the Intermediate section (below).

Riverside Youth Band and its musical director Mark Good also retained the Senior title unchallenged. Other winners were Perthshire Youth Brass, conducted by Willie McMullen, in the Intermediate category and Coalburn Bronze Band, directed by Jim Park, in the Novice class.

Twenty-eight bands took part in the championships, supported by Creative Scotland, which marked the culmination of three days of the Scottish Festival of Brass over two weekends.

Owen Farr was the adjudicator for the Novice and Non-competitive sections while Christopher Bond judged the Intermediate, Development and Senior sections.

The day before, four percussion ensembles took to the stage, with the following results:
